Guy's Behavior

A guy at work started being friendly, is he just trying to get to know me? How do I make a good connection with him at work and outside of work?

I just got a new job. There's this guy at work that asked for my number, he started to text me yesterday and said to me to keep having spirit for that day. Then a few days ago he invited me to join a dinner at my boss's house with the other coworkers. When I told him that I couldn't join them at the dinner party, he asked me the reason why, and questioned me if i have other agenda at that day, like going out at night. He asked me if I go out at all, the other day he asked me if i like billiards, and suggested other male coworker to go out with me for billiards. He helps me a lot with my work. Is he just being friendly? Is it normal for this guy at work to do all these thing to me when he just met me? How do I make a good connection with this guy? I don't want to make the situation awkward between us cause we have to work together and meet each other everyday. How do I make a good relationship with him? I'm very shy and insecure at work
