Is he interested?

A guy i met online seems to give mixed signals. We met in person a quite a few times and he has told intimate / personal stuff about himself. He is currently unwell (undiagnosed illness since past few months) and doesn't seem to want to commit. He once said that since he was unable to work, we should pay for our own meal when we meet but the next time we met he still insisted on paying for me.

He texts several times daily, usually some news items or forwards etc and sometimes full conversations. We had a 6 hour phone call a couple of nights ago where we touched upon a lot of personal and intimate stuff. I asked him if he ever saw me in a romantic light and he said that was the first time he had felt it. I told him that I felt he had been into me for quite some time but didn't realize it because the signs were there; he never denied it. He just kept saying he was not well or financially stable and hence could not say anything. We talked about it a bit more then put down the phone.

Super confused. He seems into me but keeps denying it. Is it because he is trying to be sensible or is he just not into me.

Sounds like he likes you, but doesn’t want to pursue anything because of his illness and financial situation. It’s hard to prioritize a relationship when there’s a lot going on in someone’s life and I think it’s nice that he was honest with you. I imagine he’d like to carry on as usual with you, but if you choose to do so then just be careful. You don’t want to invest your time and feelings into someone who is unavailable, or risk getting very hurt when you don’t have to.
