Why would strangers call a woman by a pet name?

I don’t know why, but strangers call me baby, sweetie, cutie, lovely, darling, beautiful, sweetheart, honey, gorgeous, princess, and whatever else they want.

For example, the doorman at my apartment building always calls me girl. I thought he just called every woman girl, but he then I saw that he greets my friends by their name. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It doesn’t bother me. I’m just curious.

could be familiarity, as in the case of your doorman... or it could be just a habit, in the case of some people

I get called honey, sweetie, hon... a lot, and it usually older women, they don't know but is just what they do with most if they feel comfortable enough

others will do that as well, because of familiarity... a lot of older man refer to me as son as well, lol
