He said he’s a transporter in the hospital? Is he lying?

I’m new to the job at the hospital and one of the workers sat outside and always watch me when I’m walking inside the hospital before my shift. One day, He approached me one day and we make a brief talk and he tells me he’s a transporter.

He walks to the main lobby, sits outside in front, scrolls on his phone, then he gets up and walk back inside and that’s his entire routine whenever I see him. I never see him with any patients transporting them anywhere. I’m confused how is he a transporter but has so much time on his hands?

I'm working in a hospital myself and sometimes we do need our patients transported somewhere. It can be by car outside or by wheelchair inside. But it depends on how many transporters there are per shift and also how long the patients need for each treatment, as there can be quite some stuff ongoing for a sole issue.

I’m not sure how it works in that hospital but I’ve been in some where they use volunteers for patient transport.

Heaven forbid they hire staff and actually pay them.

Right, in this case in the US the hospital I work at pays their transporters. We’re busy and have thousands of patients. I just found it interesting that with such a busy hospital he’s strolling or just sits outside.

Sounds like he’s waiting for his next page for a patient needing moving. Why would you be suspicious of this? If he was lying wouldn’t the hospital have him removed?

Our hospital isn’t quick to let go of someone for they’re always watching closely and give warnings. I was suspicious because I would see him strolling through as I’m working up front and he just sits outside. Moments later he goes up stairs, comes back down with a book bag, and he’s headed home. Our hospital is jammed packed with patients and I found it hard to believe that you’re a worker but hardly working.

Is he the only person with this job? It seems stranger that he’d just hung around and did nothing. Most people would get bored, especially if they didn’t receive actual income out of it.

No not the only one. We have other transporters that I see bringing patients around the hospital or out of the hospital. I believe the transporters at my job get paid here in the US. That’s the same question I had it was a bit weird to see.

To the best of my knowledge the majority of hospitals here in the UK have volunteers to act as porters moving patients to all the various locations required.

Maybe he has a lot of downtime in between transporting patients

Very smart girl. Yes, they tend to only move patients at certain times of the day, like for recreational activities or an appointment with their physical therapist. Most of them are volunteers, so they are not getting paid any money to do very demanding work.
