So when faced with that he has to make some sort of comment. Maybe in your mind what he should have done is said "I'm sorry, let's go on a date tonight.", but that would have come off as passive.

So he expresses some annoyance or possibly some hurt feelings. It he really said he's not dated before, I think you could have been a little more compassionate towards him, but whatever.

You know, you could have invited him out on a date instead. Maybe you did already and he keeps canceling?
