Is my friend trying to tell me he wants to be more than just friends?

so the first example is we were texting and he texted me "I'm sure whatever happens things are gonna change" and I asked him what kind of things? And he said "just our friendship in general." I was confused what he meant so I asked him "what like that we won't be friends in the future? That kind of change?" Then he just said "nevermind haha i meant it more of a question than a statement." But here's the thing if he meant it as a question than a statement, he wouldn't of answered my question about what he meant when he said "our friendship in general." Then the 2nd example is we were talking on the phone and something then more confusing he was talking to me about was emotional attachment and how he won't share certain stuff because he knows it will happen, saying that he will basically get emotionally attached.. and i said you think that would happen? And he said, "no i just know." I just don't know why he brought it up because he's never really talked much about emotion feely type stuff.. like ever. But then again later while we were talking on the phone he said to me "I don't know why but I always feel like the best version of myself talking with you." I am just confused with how he's acting towards me what do you guys think? He seems a tad wishy washy.
