Why would a guy still reply if he says he’s done with you?

Me and this guy ended things almost a month ago.. (it was random, he also said some mean things to me.. he was going through financial issues at the time) I still randomly text him cuz I miss him and he always replies back and hasn’t blocked me… Or told me to leave him alone. Is there a chance that he still cares? Or should I just stop checking on him?
