Meaning of hugs from guy to girl?

My guy friend used to hug me just one arm, but he recently hug me with both of his arms, and rub my back everytime. The other day he message me if I like his hugs.
Do the guys rub girl's back if they think her as friends? And ask her if she likes their hugs?

Maybe it's just me but I don't take/make hugs personal unless they are longer than usual or strange in context (like: we just met or that it stands out from how they usually do things).

The latter in this case seems to be the case, you say it like he don't usually do this. Then maybe he do feel like he needs to be more close to you than others.
He asked if you like the hugs, maybe he's picked up on your confusion about it too, if you do like him back you should make the next hug longer. If not, make it short, shallow and also tell him if too much.

Thank you for answering! Yeah, we became friends 1.5 years ago and the way he hugs me changed since last a couple of months. Until then he had never rubbed my back and always one arm hug. I wasn't sure why he suddenly asked me if I like his hugs (he said he likes my hugs as well)

Hugs can mean a lot to a person. Certainly for a guy as we generally don't get as much close-contact. Now, this depends a lot on who he is but if he spend lots of time alone then hugging helps out a lot and can to the hugged can feel more personal as the intensity of a depraved person seeps through. Not saying he's that guy, just saying as a sidenote.
