Why did my friends with benefits ask me on dates if he's already rejected me before?

Anonymous

I have been sleeping with a man as a friends with benefits for about 10 months now and realized I had feelings for him about 4 months ago. I told him immediately that I had feelings and he politely rejected me at that time, saying that he did not return them and he liked me just not in that way. We ultimately kept sleeping together and decided to forget it ever happened.

We both see other people and frequently share stories of our other conquests as pillow talk after we finish sleeping together. Recently, I started seeing someone else that is actually really sweet to me and I casually mentioned it. Ever since I told him about that, he has flipped a switch and has started asking me out on actual dates.

I just want to know why he would do this if he literally already rejected me before. I don't think he actually has feelings for me and honestly I feel like this is just his way of playing keep away from the other guy. Is it normal to go to such great lengths to keep a friends with benefits around?
