Guys, Why does he keep telling me he is poor?

He has a good job and nice car, his family do very well for themselves and live in lavish homes. Yet, out if nowhere he will randomly tell me he has no money.

I am not high maintenance and I never ask for expensive gifts (or any gifts) yet he is constantly telling me he is not rich. Honestly it hurts, cause I feel as though I'm not worthy when he does this. The guy drives a Mercedes and only buys designer.

He is no longer my boyfriend but we still talk, and I've told him I don't want his money and it's honestly embarrassing regularly having to express that I'm not some crazy girl wanting his cash, and yet the topic of conversation still creeps up. Like, I've never had a guy do this to me before.

Maybe he doesn’t want you to have high expectations. He might not be rich after all. He looks rich with his fancy car but how much money does he actually posses cold hard cash? Who knows he might be telling you the truth actually and being clear with you a lot of woman want a man with money in todays age. Also he could just be testing you to see if you stick around… what do I know

In the beginning he was boasting about his cash, telling me he wanted to buy me things. I just laughed, I figured it was just his ego talking.

Then he instantly regretted it and tried so hard in every conversation to tell me he can't afford things. It makes me feel like I have no value. We are not even together anymore and it's like he's addicted to telling me. I didn't even go for him for his car, I actually told him to one that is cheaper to run (advice he listened to) and if this is all a big test it definitely didn't pay off. Even a poor man can put some penny's away to buy a girl flowers. So telling me from the get go that he has nothing was such a turn off. In my mid he's mapping out my future with him as being limited.

Like I said, you don't need to be rich to make a girl feel special. Everyone can do a little something. Do you think I'm over-reacting when I told him how I felt?

There are certain (rich) parts in my state where this is the social norm. I guess they were historically afraid of being overrun by Gypsies and beggars. 🙄

Can you imagine how embarrassing it feels to constantly hear this from a guy? If a guy wants to test a girl, just watch how she treats her family and pay attention to the type of characters she calls her friends.

I know. I had to tell my colleague to stop with this bullshit. He just blabbed it out automatically, as he learned it from his parents, as they did from his grandparents. It’s pathetic.

I just think, if you are not certain about a girl then leave her. If you feel the need to do these silly little tests then either the guy ain't ready for a relationship or she's not the one.
