I think it's best to move on and not think about if he lied or not.
But based on what you're saying, it does sound like he is just trying to say things that will suit him better in the argument. If he really meant it he wouldn't leave you for someone else. Don't believe the bad things he said in the argument.
Be proud of yourself, know your worth, and find someone who doesn't play this kind of mind games.
