Guy's Behavior

Broody guy at work stares, smiles and insists on saying hi to me when he sees me. He will go out of his way to check on me if I look frazzled. Why?

I’ve worked with a guy for the last two years. While we work in the same part of our building, we don’t work closely, mostly just in passing with an occasional email from my department to his. His entire department knows our teams and its members and vice versa. He was always broody and serious. About a month ago , we struck up a silly conversation and it was memorable. Since then, he is all smiles and stares if he sees me in his area he will then go out of his way to say hi. Now this is only when he sees me. If he has a reason, he will say hi, not take his eyes off me, and ask me how I am. Even if his bosses are around and he’s having an extremely important conversation (it’s the job), I will become what he stares at. If I look frazzled (his words not mine), he will stop and do a full check me and make sure I am okay before walking off. If people interrupt his talking to me he stays focused on me. Thats it though. I would say he’s just being nice, but we’ve known each other for a couple years now. He’s always been this broody guy who just focuses on work and doesn’t really talk to anyone outside his department. What’s going on?
