Why would a man be hesitant to tell me that he went on a date?

Firstly, I realize that this may be a dumb question so please spare me of sarcastic and/or unhelpful responses. Anyway, here’s some context:

I work with this guy and we have a great (working) relationship. We talk and laugh all the time. This morning, I overheard him telling another colleague that he went out on a date this past Saturday and how great the girl is and how great the date went. Later on, I asked him how his weekend was and he didn’t mention the date at all. What could this possibly mean? Thanks in advanced.

Could be simpler than you think.

He doesn't count you a close friend, so it is natural not to share those tiny/important details with you.
You're a colleague, all respect to you, but just a colleague. While he may be used to sharing and consulting that other one.

Because we talk about everything. I suppose I was more surprised than anything.

"we talk about everything"... okay maybe he doesn't see it that way. You shouldn't eavesdrop on other people's conversations either.

It is possible that he does not want to share these topics with you, and it is possible that he likes the girl he is dating. To him, you are a work friend

Maybe he's also interested in you and he doesn't want you to think that he's unavailable.
