Why did my boyfriend growl like an animal?

My boyfriend saw me hanging out with my friend and he started to growl like a dog and I'm not talking about the sexy growling I'm talking about the heavy breathing angry dog growling and my friend was about to look in the direction it was coming from but I distracted them by talking so they didn't turn their head and see my boyfriend acting strange and making those noises while glaring at me.
