I've known this guy for 20yrs, we actually met in an AOL chat room lol, met up, had a situationship for like a year. After that we kept in touch, but pretty much never met up in person, except when he asked me to go to his daughter's 5th birthday party (I have a kid and he needed kids to attend). He asked me to go play pool with him and a buddy a couple years ago, I declined. Then last Christmas I got to chatting with him about football cards because my son wanted some for Christmas but I didn't know where to get the best prices, he told me where to shop and also offered some of his cards which I again declined, but he insisted. I told him my boyfriend is the jealous type and he said he would leave them in my mailbox. Anyways, I go get the package out of my mailbox and immediately notice that it reeks of cologne. Not like he was holding it and it transferred, like he sprayed it directly. I'm dying to know why he did that, and why he's kept in touch for 20yrs. He's usually the one that reaches out to see how I'm doing... this guy has lived in my head rent free (but has no clue lol)
Okay, that's a really strange situation. My gut feeling is that spraying the cologne on the package was his weird way of trying to impress you or throw out a hint that he's still interested after all these years.
A few thoughts on what it could mean:
- He was trying to make the package smell nice, like a gift, as a subtle way of flirting. Guys spraying cologne is usually to attract girls.
- Maybe it was his odd way of "marking his territory" by adding his scent to it. Like telling other guys it's from him in a primal brain way lol.
- Could be he wanted you to associate the smell with him so you think of him when you catch a whiff of the cologne later.
- May have been shyly sending a signal that he's still single and interested without directly saying it.
After 20 years of staying in touch, it definitely sounds like he's never fully gotten over you. I'd say he probably still has feelings and was taking a shot by adding the extra "personal touch" with the cologne. Up to you if you want to subtly let him know it was noticed or just ignore it!

Maybe he accidentally spilled some on the package, or it transferred from a table surface to the box. I would not think this was on purpose unless he knew you would associate that cologne with him specifically.

It’s very simple. Why don’t you just ask him
Maybe it was a joke...
