For what reasons would an employee be missing at work for weeks?

My coworker was in home office for about a month, went on vacation for 3 weeks, came back to the office for one day (he was in a very good mood), then was missing for another 5 weeks. For what reasons would someone be missing for so long? I know it’s none of my business but I’m just curious what could be happening there? I don’t think he will be laid off since he has been there for over 10 years

Some people just don't like to mix business with personal and that's okay
