I don't really want to tell the whole story for privacy reasons but I was letting a guy know that I wanted to be friends and he doesn't seem too engaged in that.

BUT this guy did any and everything to get my attention online. Do I be patient or just move on

Dont waste HIS time. If HE doesn't seem interested in just a friendship, there is no reason to try to convince him to be just a friend (if he is hoping / looking for something more)
You are only wanting a friendship with this person, and HE may hope it'll turn into a relationship down the road, or you two will eventually begin dating, etc. As that's typical to be friends first, before exploring romantic relationship together.

I would let this guy know you appreciate his interest, and set your boundary. Don't waste his time, when he is seeking someone to build with. That is probably why he isn't keen on being just friends, and it's not fair to act as a friend to him, while still letting him have that false hope.
By accepting to be his friend, you are, unintentionally, making him believe you care about him and enjoy his attention, talking to him, etc. Which implies, to HIM that you may be interested in him in a romantic way in the future.

I would say no to the friendship, and let him find someone who is more worth his time.

I never threw away a possible relationship but to me relationships lasts longer when you were friends first. I'd hate to base a relationship off of sex.
So if this guy tried getting my attention online what does he want? He hasn't hit me up about things and I'm left feeling very confused. I thought if I say friends then that'll lesson the pressure of things

"Friends" to him might be an instant shut down, he might have taken it as you "Friend-zoned" him and want nothing more.
Unfortunately online, it's hard to tell the meaning and convey tones, emotion, etc. through messaging! Can you speak with him one on one over voice chat, or Skype? Or even phone if you have his info?
He might be confused, or even hurt as he took you wanting "friendship" the wrong way, and figured you wanted nothing to do with him as a partner, or had any romantic interest.

I would try to send him a message, asking if he can talk because you want to ensure you clear up any confusion, or asking him if he is okay. Give him some time to respond and see what happens. I hope he does reach out and inform you why he pulled away. It could be a total misunderstanding on his part.
