How to do a full-body workout program well?

I'm doing workout for a few months now and I think some muscles are too much developped compared to other.

My first concern is my abs. Though my upper and lower abs are very strong (or at least when contracting it appears to be) my side abs and oblique are almost non-existent.
Also, I think I'm neglecting my back muscles.

There is so many body part to pay attention to. I'm not asking for a miraculous workout or sport for every muscles at the same time, but I'd like to have a few hint.

Is th gym mandatory if you want to do a full-body program? How can you notice irregularities in you muscle build?
