I think they are, there's nothing like a high carb meal to get you ready train, in my opinion real food will always beat supplements. Even back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's they wouldn't use pre-workout they would just eat a good meal before training, and that's what I do to I get great results.
in my opinion, yes. I've wasted too much money when I was younger on GNC bullshit. Instead of buying powders, I bought actual food. That was one major catalyst for real gains for me.

They do give you a burst of energy, you can lift a bit more and it helps with motivation when you're buzzing in the gym. They shouldn't be taken every workout though.
