Asking is always the best way to know. When people are depressed, they might be less interested in talking, doing activities, their posture will be different, they won't laugh as much etc etc... You will notice they will feel down. But as I said, you should engage your friend in a conversation and direct that conversation to his side trying to know if something is wrong with him/her , his/her life.

This can easily be Google. But the best indicators are: how are they sleeping, and what's their eating like? If hey sleep too much or too little, and are eating a lot or hardly eating (subject to THEIR OWN interpretation, not others') are good indicators.
But seriously, do a Web search, you will find your question has been thoroughly covered by professionals.
There usually are no clear indicators because most depressed people hide their depression really well.

Frequent mood swings, lack of social activities, self awareness and concentration.
Disinterest in eating or playing. Unrealistic thoughts and daydreams etc
