What are your tried and true tricks for getting to sleep? Staying asleep?
What don't you recommend?
First, I recommend trying to stick to a regular schedule. Constantly changing it by staying up way late some nights is a problem.
Second, I'd make sure you're sufficiently tired when you go to bed. Lying around all day won't make your body tired and you won't sleep. Even on days off, try to move around so your body will actually have some fatigue when you go to bed.
Third, over-active brain activity is a problem for many. Rather than thinking about things that worry you, or things that require a lot of thought, focus on stuff like memories. Remember your favorite movies, games, childhood moments, etc.) You mentioned games; sometimes to help turn my brain off at night, I'll run through a segment of some of my favorite games (which doesn't require any real brain activity), and I start feeling tired.
Fourthly, avoid ingesting too much sugar and caffeine during the day. That should go without saying but you'd be surprised how many people don't realize that drinking a bunch of soda can really be a detriment to sleep.
I have suffered from mild insomnia for a good part of my life. The 'trick' I used, was to just lay in my bed, even if I never felt sleepy. eventually i used to doze off. Not always, but sometimes at least.
