Hi BigVic,
First of all, your weight has little if anything to do with how attractive you are to girls. Just be sure to dress well (not expensive, but always tidy, and put some thought into it), take extra time with hair, use a nice scented shower gel, good grooming, etc. and always wear a smile. Girls can *never* resist a great smile.
To overcome your shyness, you might try some visualization techniques, and by that I just mean simple things like taking some quiet time to just imagine yourself as an outgoing, cheerful, happy guy. Think of it as a sort of meditation, where you just sit with your eyes closed, nobody watching you - just indulge in the fantasy of being the guy you want to be. Eventually, you will naturally become it without any effort.
What girls really want, (no matter their size, short, tall, blond, brunette, whatever,) is to feel like their guy thinks they are amazing. That they are special on the inside, truly interesting to be with, and not just another pretty face. (Gee, does that sound at all like what a guy really wants, too?)
I wouldn't concentrate on the actual talking-to-girls part just yet - work on your overall confidence first, and the girls will happen naturally. People are naturally drawn to you when you're having fun. It's important to get out there with your guy friends and do stuff like play some pool, join a computer gaming club, volunteer, or do other social activities. Make your own party, and people will want to crash it.
Good luck ;)

I'm rather shy when it comes to women, I according to many, have a good sense of humor and other decent qualities though. I had a girlfriend when I weighed in at 220 pounds at only 5'6" without doing much other than being myself. So my advice would be just accentuate the good qualities you posses in any manner you're able to, and some woman will come along that will appreciate you for who you are. Keep in mind there are a number of women that are actually more attracted to what some would call 'teddy bear' physiques on men. So don't necessarily think of the being overweight as an automatic negative.
