You won't really lose weight through exercise.
When they say diet and exercise, it is true, but it's something like 90% / 10%.
The exercise is there to keep your muscle tone, and if you can build muscle mass, it raises your base metabolic rate. Without exercise, dieting can cause your body to lose muscle mass, to go into starvation mode, to lower your base metabolic rate.
But similarly, if you don't change your diet, exercise will really not be effective.
Now that you know this... Cardio is better if you are starting off overweight. You need to improve your heart and lungs, if you're starting off overweight. Then when it comes to doing some weight lifting, your heart and lungs will be in a much better position to help you.

I have lost a lot of weight. Best thing to do is cardio first. Burns the calories. Count your calories. Eating a small banana has 50 cals, a med 100 cals, and a large 150 cals. So everything has calories. Count them. Eat about 1,000 cals. Burn more than that in the gym. You'll lose weight fast. I also skipped breakfast and tea. Just ate lunch. The first two weeks is the hardest. Loosing a few pounds in a week didn't impress me really. But it does drop off faster the longer you do it. I now do weights and I'm getting toned.
Do both, cardio will boost your fitness and it also burns calories doing weight orientated exercises can also burn fat. If you do both try and take note of your measurements instead of just your weight :) so you can see your results. A good amount of time to work out is for about an hour you hit your fat burning stage after about twenty minutes and your heart rate should be at a 75% pace.
you HAVE to do cardio. if you just lift your going to build muscle under the fat. that then makes you look bigger. you burn more fat and calories with cardio then with lifting. so if your goal is to lose fat then id say do cardio more then lifting. sorry I know its old but just making sure you know! lol

Weightlifting puts on muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. You gain weight from weightlifting. If you want to strictly lose weight, then go all out cardio. Running will give you the best result for weight loss. However, your body will still look out of shape if you don't tone it up.
Combination of both, weights is great because the calorie burn last longer and it allows you to eat more because your consuming tons more. I am not really into cardio mostly because I get bored too easily of running on a tread mill but if you enjoy it then it is also a great way to lose weight just takes longer (more passive) compared to weight training.
cardio with a little bit of weight lifting. your gonna build muscel before you burn fat. so you don't wanna gain all that extra weight from the muscel at first because it might discourage you.
Do both, lifting weights will help build muscle and that will burn more calories. My friend who does weight lifting says that is the best way, and she knows a lot about it :)
For me, cardio and weight lifting on opposite days work the best. But you really need to try a bunch of combinations to see what works best for you.
