Why are doctors so commonly wrong?

My grandpa was told he had less than 5 months to live and he lived another 10 years

My friend was told he would have to get another liver transplant in 10 years or die and he has lived 17 years

A guy I know was told he would never walk or talk again after an accident and now he does both

I read you cannot shrink your stomach without surgery and I’ve shrunk it at least 5 times with low carb diets

I was told you cannot reverse heart disease but vegetarian websites say vegetarian diets can reverse heart disease

I was told you can’t increase in height after your growth plates fuse and I’ve grown at least 2 inches since that happened

They’re going with what convention taught them and also will make bleak projections both to avoid a lawsuit and have a reverse psychological effect on people. Mostly, I think they don’t want to set you up for disappointment.

I live with the proof everyday that they aren’t always right. There is room for improvement. The good ones know this and at the end of their careers will write the textbooks taught in medical schools to educate the next generation of doctors.

Doctors simply play the odds when making predictions. If 90% of people with a disease die in 5 years that's the time scale they'll give you. They're well aware many people will beat the odds. It's a bit like smoking, it will shorten most people's lives bit there's always that 100 year old who's smoked 60 a day since they were 10.
Another factor is they'll give you the worst case scenario so you'll make lifestyle changes to get those extra few years.

it's because doctor isn't a God. they were just predict and always offer surgery so that they could get more money. I have seen a few of my friends are still alive even tho they fell into a coma many times.
