Hello so I got the copper iud on Friday the 30th and I know it’s normal so the spotting/bleeding/and cramping wasn’t a cause for concern at first. But the cramps got progressively worse and if I moved a certain I’d have an even more intense pain shoot up. So today I went to my campus’s clinic where they gave me codeine for the pain since I was taking 6 Advil and 2 Tylenol a day and still was in pain. They also got me an appointment for a sonogram which I went to and the doc called me and said that my iud is too low and too much on the right side and I need to make an appointment with a gyno and that’s what I’ve been in so much pain. Tonight I actually felt for the strings for the first time and one of them is curled up in a circle higher up to the point where I can barely reach it and the one is fine and I can feel it but they’re on the right side. I know because Of my situation they’re probably not supposed to be/feel like that this early on. I never have an iud before and wanted to know if and when they’re normal what are they supposed to feel like/be? Like are they supposed to be on one side or in the center or a mix of the siding? And I am still taking my bc pills for regulation and in the past, has made my pms symptoms non-existent, but I know the copper iud is supposed to be painful but if anyone can share their experience and pain level and how long the pain lasted that be great cause trying to find anything online seems impossible!
The strings are supposed to sit in the centre under your cervix, but they can move around. Aslong as you can feel both strings, there’s nothing wrong. When you can only feel one string and can’t find the other, that’s when it’s time to see a doctor to re-position the strings. As for the pain, I’ve never had a copper IUD, I’ve only had the Mirena IUD, but the pain from that was unbearable for 5 months so I had it removed. I’ve heard that the copper IUD is 10x more painful and usually takes up to 12 months for the pain to go away. You don’t need to continue bc pills now that the IUD is in you, the IUD works as contraception essentially straight away. If you’re finding that the IUD is giving you so much pain that even pain medication isn’t helping, then please see a doctor or someone at planned parenthood and discuss your concerns with them. But in general, pain is normal for the first 9-12 months and should settle after that time frame. Good luck!
