My friend has an eating disorder and talks nonstop about it - I see her spit out cookies because she doesn't want to consume calories. I see her eating nothing but vegetables. I see her calculating calories before anything she eats. She tells me about always making her vomit after she eats because she wants to achieve a certain body shape. I am still trying to help her and get her out of this disordered eating, but she always claims that it's "normal" and she's just trying to look better (and I have always admired her body shape). Recently, I found myself being affected as well. I have also started restricting my food, observing little details of my body in the mirror, and being insecure about my appearance. I've also vomited a few times after eating "too much" and would feel very guilty afterward. I feel like she has negatively affected my body image and mental health, but I also feel bad about pushing her away since she needs help. What do I do?
Superb Opinion
You're a good friend, but you have tried hard enough to help her. So my advice would be to tell her that unless she gets help, than you don't want to hear about her disorder.
And does her family know about it?
