Help - my boyfriend has an eating disorder and I don’t know what to do?

Anonymous
I’m a girl (22) and my boyfriend is almost 24. He got ill in summer last year and lost a lot of weight, he was never overweight he was just fairly average weight and didn’t go to the gym or anything so not much muscle.

Ever since he’s had an obsession with being skinny and hasn’t gained the weight back, and purposely eats less. He has openly admitted he thinks he has an eating disorder. I think he is definitely anorexic. For reference, he’s a very tall man (6’4ish) and I can see his ribs, spine, everything…

He also does cardio now which he never used to do and admits sometimes he does it if he thinks he’s eaten too much the day before (which usually is a normal amount of food). He ends up binging and gets upset about it but it’s because he’s not eating enough the rest of the time.

We used to be huge foodies and now he barely eats snacks, doesn’t eat breakfast, nowhere near enough for a tall man for lunch, and not enough at dinner usually (so I’ve been trying to bulk up the meals even though I’m trying to lose weight)

I just don’t know what to do. I’ve suggested loads of ways to help, resources for him to look into. He got in touch with the doctor about mental health but didn’t mention the eating problems. He makes jokes about having an eating disorder and it makes me uncomfortable. If I mention anything about it he goes in a bad mood and gets offended. People stop him and tell him he’s lost so much weight - he says this makes him upset but I think secretly he likes it. One guy we are friends with made a joke saying ‘you’ve lost so much weight, are you anorexic or something?’ Months ago and he keeps bringing it up? And of course this sounds horrible but physically I’m not attracted to him at the moment as he looks severely underweight and unwell. Although the attraction is the absolute least of my worries, the main thing is him being healthy and eating enough!

I really don’t know what to do. Does anyone have any advice? It’s so heartbreaking seeing him like this
