I know due to emotional problems my child hood was a nightmare, I had anorexia which led to psychological and mental anguish. I had social anxiety which led to isolation and I had a persistent fear of getting sick too. But looking back, I do not remember what those bad emotions felt like, what I remember is rollerblading at the park, skating at the ice rink, volunteering to help make artistic displays for the drama students after school, doing volunteer work at the food bank, playing computer games at my best friend's house, listening to music on my dad's friend's child's computer, eating lavish food at Christmas parties, trying on nail polish at my cousin's house, hanging out at TJ Max in America to buy cheap outfits that looked great, eating spinach pizza at the mall. It's like I only remember the good flavours of my life. The bad is forgotten.
Having a biased selective memory leaning towards positivity rather than the truth can have both positive and negative aspects.
The postive ones are:
Psychological well-being - Focusing on positive memories can contribute to better mental health and well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.
Resilience - Selective memory bias towards positivity can help individuals bounce back from adversity and maintain a more optimistic outlook on life.
The negative ones are:
Reality distortion - Ignoring or distorting negative experiences can lead to a skewed perception of reality, which may hinder personal growth and decision-making.
Interpersonal relationships - being overly selective with memory can create challenges in relationships if one avoids addressing issues or conflicts honestly.
In summary, while some bias towards positivity in memory can be beneficial for mental health and resilience, it is important to strike a balance between acknowledging reality and focusing on the positive to make informed decisions and maintain healthy relationships.
Thats at least my intake on it.
