I've never had spotting in the past but since I've been on birth control I just assumed it was a side effect.
Anyways, my last period was in December. And 2.5 weeks later I started to spot. Just to clarify- when I say spot, I mean bleeding that is not enough to cover a pad but enough that you need to wear one so that your undies aren't ruined. However, I started stressing heavily 2 days before and assumed I had breakthrough bleeding in result. After the 10th day of spotting- I stopped taking the birth control because I assumed it also had to do with that. Three days later I stopped spotting. Did not continue to take the birth control afterwards.
However, 2 weeks later I started getting symptoms; slight nausea, slight tiredness, and tingling breast. It's a week later and I'm still having the same symptoms. These are not my usual PMS symptoms so I'm just searching for more answers. My breasts usually get sore before my period but this feeling is different. I did take 3 pregnancy tests throughout the week just to rule that out. All were negative.
So now I'm just wondering if spotting is considered a period? And if so, maybe my period will start in the next week and I'm just having PMS symptoms earlier than usual.
Have you had any weird PMS/ possible pregnancy symptoms? And if so, what were they?
What Girls Said
Women don't have periods when they are on birth control, they just have withdrawal bleeding. Spotting happens a lot, especially in the beginning as your body is trying to adjust to the artificial hormones. It could be that your body just was not adjusted enough to have a full withdrawal bleeding, so for that month it just consisted of some spotting. Some women never get over it though, their body just doesn't adjust well to the hormones and they will either randomly or continuously spot. You can try a lower dosage, which may or may not fix it. Having lots of stress can also shift your hormones, which could lead to breakthrough bleeding. Getting off of birth control will once again throw your body into a hormonal imbalance, which is why you were having the PMS symptoms. That could go away in a month, it could go up to 3 months and beyond. After 3 months of weird symptoms, you were supposed to check with a doctor though. It's not really good to be getting on and off birth control in such a short span of time though. I would suggest taking a break for at least several months to allow your body to get back to normal, then if you want you can try a different dosage of birth control. But I would not suggest doing so unless you are willing to stick with it for at least 6 months to give your body a chance to adjust to it fully.
Thank you for your answer. You've gave me more clarity than anything.
Hope you get back to normal soon! Bc can be really frustrating
Yep that is completely normal. I have been on the pill for years and when I first started my period got all sorts of out of whack. After a few months things started to fall in line and become pretty regular. Now it is so regular that I can almost set a watch by it and the symptoms are like clockwork. I have two bad days at the beginning where the flow is medium to heavy and I get cramps and all that good stuff. Then day 3 on it is spotting where I can just use a pad typically. So your symptoms are pretty typical and nothing to worry about in my opinion. Now if you are concerned call your gyno and see what they say. I switched birth control a couple times until I found one that agreed with me.
May I ask which birth control you use? I was using a 2.5 Norethindrone.
Yasmin which is pretty standard for a lot of girls. I had another type before that and it didn't agree with me to well in a lot of ways.
Ok, thanks for sharing. :-)
Sure thing!!
Yes your body is behaving weird maybe try a different pill! If you don't like these side effects.
Also these could be related to having sex and being infertile due to the pill.
Your body wants to be pregnant but can't.
