First of all, doctors do not prescribe pills for a cold. A cold is a virus so there aren't any pills that will help speed recovery. If you go into a doctor with a cold, he or she will just tell you to get a lot of fluids, rest, and vitamins. As for it being a business, doctors do not get money when they write you a prescription. That money goes to the pharmacy and pharmaceutical companies. So I really don't see any motivation for doctors to be less honest. They are going to give you the best advice they can based off of their training and the knowledge we as humans have about medicine and disease. It is, of course, your right to either accept or refuse their treatment options. They are just providing you with all of the options before you make your choice.
And I'm not entirely sure what you mean by traditional ways. Just waiting it out and letting your body heal itself? Using herbs and other non remedies from nonwestern medicine? Again, as I said above, it is completely your choice about which methods to use and in certain situations, one method may be better than others. Just keep in mind that our life expectancy has increased greatly since the advent of western medicine. Just things to consider.

I worked at a medical school for two years. Granted, there are always going to be some people who are just in it for the money, but the vast majority of the students I met went to medical school because they wanted to help people. If you run into a doctor who seems shady, chances are good that you can find a better one with relatively little effort.
Also, regarding pills (and other medicines): The reason we have pills in the first place is that traditional methods weren't effective enough to help people prevent or recover from their illnesses. A lot of diseases that we can treat or prevent pretty effectively now were completely untreatable in the past, which is why you don't see too many people dying from smallpox or polio anymore.
I have a lot of faith in the medical community myself, because I know they've done a heck of a lot over the course of human history to improve our standard of living, and because I know how hard doctors actually have to work to get their education and to help their patients.
Im on the path to becoming a doctor myself, you cannot go into this proffesion and be in it just for the money, there is so much involved with various courses, tests, and all the time spent to become a doctor. People need to be passionate and something as "invaluable" as money is not enough to keep people going through the various hurdles.
Grantes there are doctors who become greedy later on but this is a small majority and should not affect your view or opinion of them. Doctors are good and decent people who have gone into medicine for one sole reason, to help people.
Why would you go to the doctor for a simple cold?
Two days ago I had a nasty fall at work, did quite a bit of damage to my right ankle. Long story short the doctors told me that simple over the counter pain killers would do fine if I was in pain and did not perscribe me any pills.

Doctors don't prescribe pills for a cold... the common cold is a virus and pills won't do anything for it.
Most alternative medicine practices (homeopathy/naturopathy etc.) do not have much research to back up their claims. And I've never seen any natural remedies cure a major infection, prevent someone from having seizures, control diabetes, etc.---but I have seen pharmaceuticals do this.
I do trust my doctor. However, I do realize that doctors are only people.. so if I wasn't sure about my doctor's advice, I would seek a second opinion.Yes I do.
The amount of schooling they have had- I trust that they know more about making my body well than I do. True, it is up to me to be informed enough to tell them important information so they can help me.
As far as the medication goes, it is important that you are careful. You don't want to ASK for the medication or go in with this preconceived notion that you want medication. You also want to go in with the mindset that if you can do it without meds then that is what you want to do.yeah, as long as they're not prescribing something, they're usually doing their job to the best of their ability... such as is the case when you get physicals for instance
i never trusted doctors to begin with
i only go when something is SERIOUSLY wrong with me
if I'm just coughing or fever I don't bother, just drink plenty of fluids and eat properlyI've never had a bad experience, so yes, I trust them for the most part. Their job is to make you feel better.
Here's the thing about so-called alternative medicine.
It's all been tested by now. The stuff that works, was promoted to "medicine".
The stuff that didn't, didn't.i had a bad experience with a dentist! hate that bitch! she messed up my teeth.
