Do you think London went a little overboard to prepare for the Olympics?

Okay, I can understand security is important. But London looks like its preparing for an invasion by an army. I think SAMs are the worst offense, literally I think that if a plane flies over London at the time of the olympics that they will be shot down.

Do you guys agree this is a little too overboard?

Ok that story is kind of ridiculous - I live in london, and I can say that the fence is only electrified at certain points, them being the royal entrances for the Queen.

Also you can't "buy" a pass for the Olympic lane, only representatives of the countries and very high ranking Olympic officials can use them (and emergancy services of course) hell even cyclists aren't allowed on them, and the fine of using them otherwise is over £150.

Also London does not look like its preparing for an invasion, I was in central london and the olympic park all day today and I saw less police than there were at Wimbolden. As for the anti-air missiles, they are the one thing that's overboard. But hell there are only 3 sets of them

The UK (like America) is paranoid to the point of insanity when it comes to terrorism.

But at least they had an excuse. Years of troubles with the IRA.

Now with Al-Quaeda allegedly in existance, they have every single paranoid reason in the world to put unprecedented security on the streets to protect against any terrorism in the Olympics.

The real thing to watch, won't be any Muslim fireworks though.

The real thing to watch (and I suggest we all watch, quite closely) is how the authorities "suddenly realise" how useful it would be to law and order, to maintain the insane levels of surveillance and weaponised police on the streets, long after the Olympics is over.

I guess you're right, and the last paragraph is kinda creepy, if they have the ability to do this now, think of how it will be after the olympics.

I think it would be foolish to not be as safe as possible with such a huge amount of people, including important figures from each country.

Also, London is going to be so busy. They need extra security for that.

Before the ceremony, they already prevented an attack. Of course the olympics is going to be a target. one billion people were watching the opening ceremony and it wouldn't just be London who will see the effects.

I don't see how anyone could think that such security for the olympics these days could be too much.

No, I think it's a good thing. Especially with how many psychopaths there are in this world. A huge event like the Olympics needs more security anyway. I can't fault them for going overboard, there's nothing wrong with being overly prepared, they just want to keep people safe in the long run. And no one really knows what great lengths some insane idiots may take to ruin the whole thing.

There were rumours of a terrorist attack, and considering the global tensity it wouldn't surprise me to find a terrorist attack at this, which was supposed to be one of the largest events yet. t think they've taken the right precautions.

They've gone a little overboard with advertising, though. Like, ridiculously so. I mean, you can't even wear clothes that aren't made by brands that are sponsoring the Olympics, and some restaurant owner who owned the 'Olympic Café' was forced to change the name of the place because it featured the word Olympic. News stories weren't allowed to show the Olympic rings, etc. I mean, that's just *insane*, I don't get that at all. Britain today has a tendency to make everything into a ridiculous joke - the Queen, the Empire, the Government. Their official coverage of the Jubilee was done in a comedy style, and now they're downscaling the games to cheap penny-catching.

No, I think it's fine. The only thing is it's all a huge waste of money for them, but they chose to host it, and I guess supposedly there's money to be made in the long run. The whole thing would be ruined if terrorism happened, which lots of nuts would love to do.

No I don't think they went overboard. With so many people they cannot predict what the few reckless individuals might try to do. If I was there I would only feel more safe they are taking so many precautions.
