Not saying you are obese, but do you live in one of these states? And if so, why do you think your state is obese?
Nope.
States are obese because they eat lots of fattening food, and don't live an active lifestyle.
For example, someone in a fat state might have french toast made of white bread with tons of margarine and fake syrup on it for breakfast.
Then they'll snack on a couple donuts with coffee and sugar.
Then for lunch, they'll have a big mac and fries and a coke and an apple pie from McDonald's.
Their afternoon snack will be potato chips with some sort of fake sour cream dip and a giant Mt Dew.
Dinner will be fried chicken, mashed potatoes out of a box with gravy out of a pouch, and for dessert they'll have a piece of cake.
Late at night, they'll eat doritos and a mars bar in front of the TV with one of those fake "juice drinks".
They have to drive everywhere, and they don't exercise.
This is the extreme, but it's always *some* version of this lifestyle making people obese.
People who live in thin states eat granola or eggs for breakfast and drink green tea. They ride their bike to work, have a big salad and hardboiled eggs for lunch, drink water, snack on fruit, eat grilled or baked meat and veggies for dinner, maybe go ahead and splurge on a dessert, go to the gym, and go to bed instead of snacking in front of the TV.
I live in alabama and yes there are a lot of people who are overweight and obese here. I used to be one of them but now I am thin, active and healthy. A lot of the stores where I live have bigger plus size departments compared to average size and junior size departments.
im underweight but live in IN and have lived in LA & spent time in AL.
southern tradition of the meat & 2(or 3) for lunch. then have it again for supper. a lot is diet related & culture. the midwest kinda eats similar to the south which is why we get the 10-20 fattest.
pick one of these - fried chicken, ribs, jambalaya, brisket, pulled pork, fried catfish, gumbo, etouffee, fried skrimps, red beans w sausage, ham steak, bbq chicken
now add 2 or 3 sides of heavy food with a lot of gravy and even skinny people can gain some weight. never liked okra until I had it fried right in the south.

You missed West Virginia...West Virginia used to be home to the fattest city in the nation - Huntington. I live right outside their...Almost everyone here is at least slightly overweight. It's depressing. I used to be obese because of the culture, but thankfully I am not 5'8 - 135-140 and a daily runner. = )
Texas is #12 according to this source link
But I think it's funny how the top 5 fattest states in 2012 are all notoriously "redneck states" lol
I think you forgot Texas !
I live in Texas and let me say that in my particular area, obesity and being overweight are a total norm. You can literally go outside and count: almost one in every four or five people will be obese or overweight. Luckily, I've never been even close to obese but at one point I was overweight, until I decided to take control and lost 40 pounds one summer, and it's great to be fit! Some people here are lazy, not to mention from the looks of it, it's also a genetical thing perhaps? Or just a habitual thing: mom and dad don't work out, so kids don't work out. See my brother plays varsity soccer and my mom hits the gym an hour a day, so I have no other choice but to be healthy. So in that sense, the reasons why can vary.
Um, why is Utah not on this list? I lived there for a few years and I noticed quit a few over weight people compared to the other states I have lived in. I'm not saying that everyone there is fat, but if you walk into a walmart 1/4 people are over weight, obese, or could use the loss of a few extra pounds. It was really sad to see.
Kentucky! Lol. Can't imagine why this is a fat state; this is horse country!
Yeah... laziness, not many people understand, no care, about the importance of exercise, poor diet choices
My home state is Michigan, but I do not contribute to the fat rating thankfully.
Fried butter sticks. Yep fry anything and everything
I live in Michigan, and yeah, there are a lot of fatter people here (not me, 5'4, 108 lbs :D) anyway, the presence of fast, cheep food in a state already struggling economically is a major factor.
Florida should be on the list
I thought Texas was one of them?
Kentucky woot
Nah.
Yes.
