Valid question. This is how I motivate myself:
1. Buy tight workout clothes. You think I'm joking but when you lose the fat and find yourself able to wear them, you won't be able to stop. By the way just tops, not shorts - tight shorts not a good look lol.
2. Measure you up against the chumps at the gym. Start outperforming them so going to the gym becomes a fun experience of watching other people SUFFER. When they look at you in awe, that's when the satisfaction comes.
3. You will never get sick. Honestly you could be scrubbing your own bathroom for days without getting any opportunistic throat/chest infections. Say goodbye to the flu.
4. You have energy all day. No sleepiness.
5. Your psychological well-being objectively improves. It's actually proven that your endocrine and metabolic wellbeing are linked to your psychological wellbeing through the hypothalamic mesolimbic system. No joke.
6. You will thank yourself in retrospect the day when you can wake up, feel like sh*t, walk outside and give yourself an ego boost because girls check you out. Trust me.

You have to make working out a habit, the way you do this is by starting out slow and making slow progression. It took me about two weeks to make working out a normal part of my day, now I am mad if I don't do a full work out.
I schedule a workout in my phone and put it on my Google calendar. So I have to look at it all day and it really motivates me. There is also a great free app called Noom in the app store that gives you points daily based on what you do and it gives you things you have to do each day. I'm competitive so it really works for me.
Visuals work really well. A calendar in which you plan our your workouts and schedule in your treat meals may work well. Cross off the days when you follow the plan.
That kind of visual can keep you motivated once you see all the days crossed off.
Also, get yourself a kick ass workout play list.

Write down your goals for working out and put them up where you are working out so that you're always thinking about why you're doing it.
If looking at your goals doesn't motivate , it may be because you have set goals too large or far away. Goals should be steps toward the end, not just the end resulti usually don't feel like working out when I just start doing weights/squats/situps first,so what works for me,is doing cardio first,it gets my blood pumping and I feel more energetic,so the rest of the workout flies by.
When I work out, I usually do it during the duration of one song. Depending on what I'm doing. Usually I'll play a fun song that gets me motivated or a song I would dance to. That's just my trick though! :)
Probably what you are doing is a waste of time.
What are your goals for working out?I trick myself into doing it (get my body doing it before my mind catches on) , or get really pumped. Just psych yourself into doing it, make sound effects if needed for extra psyching lol
Have a friend/spouse/brother/sister/mom/dad take the TV remote and not give it back to you until you do a good enough work out. It's motivation.
Depends what you want from working out. Stength, tone, size, girls?
