I feel like he's taking me for granted?

I have been doing a lot of nice things for my boyfriend and I kinda feel like he's taking me for granted. He got in trouble awhile back and I have been kind enough to take him to and from his court dates for the past couple months. He recently got laid off from his job and I have helped him buy groceries a few times. I've cooked him meals and now his birthday is coming up Saturday and I bought him a book he really wanted. He normally calls me and talks to me everyday just to see how I am because I work and have a young son so I'm very busy a lot and don't get to see him real often. Over the past week tho he's seemed distant and doesn't talk to me as much. I recently came down with the flu and he wouldn't call or text me to see how I am, I've been sick for four days. Basically if I don't initiate any kinda contact with him, I won't here from him all day for days. I asked him why he's been so quiet and distant lately and he said he's been busy. He doesn't work or really do anything. I'm kinda irritated and feel like my kindness isn't being reciprocated and almost feel like not giving him his birthday present. Is that wrong of me?

I'd give him his birthday present, especially if he knows you got it for him. But tell him attentiveness is a two way street. From what you're describing he is taking you for granted. Ask him would he do the same things for you if you were down on your luck? Staying in touch with you doesn't cost much! There's no excuse why he shouldn't call regularly no matter how busy he is.
