Should I do weights if I'm aiming for a lithe look?

I'm trying to lose weight, currently I have been watching my diet and going to the gym. I generally do cardio than some weights followed by more cardio. The weights I do all combine to work out most parts of my body. But I've been thinking that since I'm short and have pretty stocky legs maybe I should not be building up muscle there if I want a more lithe look.What are people's tips and experience with this?
