What would you get as a gift for someone you're new friends with?

I've made some friends at school and have been invited to one of their birthday parties next weekend. I don't know them super well so I'm not too sure what to get or even if I should get something.

Something cheap and simple that anyone can have use for. I am not giving gifts early in a relationship. That needs to be earned.
