A good gift is to show you know him, it doesn't have to cost anything or much, cook his fav dinner, watch football with him if he's into that or gaming, let him be into it without moaning about it, not saying you do but just saying.
Listen to him vent, even if it's about useless unimportant info, don't offer any advice, just listen.
Whats his fav tv show, get him something related to that or better yet watch it with him even if it doesn't interest you but seem interested when it's on.

I don't care for things but crave EXPERIENCES. Sky diving, flying a plane, straight razor hot towel shave, exotic restaurants, rent exotic car for weekend, live theater, culinary class, etc.
I'd say something that he will eventually get rid of because I'm sure he would rather not be reminded of his eventual ex in the future
You can just buy something he always wanted, something he talks to you about. Or Could be anything out of his online shopping cart
