Is there such a thing as 'fate' & 'destiny'?

I'm not really that religious but I just feel that life is coincidence personified at times. I mean, not only the way situations play out in our life seems really intricate but also the way how some people fall into our lives. I just think it makes life all the more interesting when you literally have no idea whats going to happen tomorrow. You can never really predict how a situation may turn out until it actually happens. Many events are inevitable, for example, we all have 'one of those days' where everything goes wrong but at the end of the day, it's not really in our power because it seems that those horrible days are unavoidable or in other words 'predetermined'. If we could avoid those days then we would, but we can't. Also, there are always people in our lives who we just want to push out the window. If we could avoid them, then we would but it's again those inevitable situations which draws us to all these conventions which can not be explained.

What do you think? Does 'fate' and 'destiny' actually play a role in our lives or is it just a religious concept which has been developped over time?
