Why do metal heads think like this?

Question

I met this metal head at my course & you're average metalhead.

I was friendly to him like I was when meeting new people, and he's taken it abit far. He comes up to me every chance he sees me, sets up work next to me and is constantly picking on me, staring me off in a competitive/playful way.

When I got to know him, I realized he's into gothic lolita clothing, gore/blood fetishes torture, bdsm, and spouting random things like 'decapitated babies. good song title' When asked (hes 22), he said he would be happy to do a 16 year old or younger because they're innocent.

I'm both uncomfortable yet intrigued about his psychology.

Not all metalheads think like that do they?

You do know that metal is not just "Genre: METAL" and it's all that, right? There's everything from ambient black through brutal black towards gothic doom and heavy or thrash until viking folk. I'm serious.

You can't just judge every "metal listening person" saying "Metal = hardcore rapist violent headbanging satanist". Like, what's up with that? It's like all people who listen to mainstream are dumb stupid retarded, and all trance listeners are partying drug addicts.

Anywho, I don't see where you see the appeal, I think that guy would scare me.

Here's a song from an italian gothic metal band, just so you'll see that not everything is heavy or death metal about rape, violence, gore and death. This is actually one of the most beautiful songs that I've ever heard, so: listen to it.

Being a part-time metalhead myself, I had contact with these weird folks a few times. But you must know that there is no typical "Metal"-music, there are more subgenres than in every other genre I know. Only a small percentage of "metalheads" are of the creepy type you described, most of them just wannabes and posers accompained by some true psychos. They can mostly be found in "darker" genres such as death, doom, gothic or black metal. Sound like he's trying to impress you with how hard he is. Well, he isn't.

I myself enjoy metal due to its complex and fast rhythm (little tipp for everyone: check out "Teargas Jazz" by the swedish "Freak Kitchen") and, of course, because playing metal songs with your guitar distorted till it screams is great fun ;)

One of my very best friends on the face of the planet is a tried and true metal head, and he is nothing like what you're describing.  He's not particularly into the goth side of it (if he is at all), and about the weirdest stuff I've ever heard come out of the speakers in his car is this band from Scotland who does this weird pirate inspired metal - and it's actually really cool. :)  He's also one of the most upstanding fellows I've ever met and is very upfront about how he respects all of his friends.  Never once did I ever hear of any kind of weird fetishes.  He's just a normal guy with a love for everything rock and metal.

I think lots of people get different outcomes from music. I listen to some really angry punk when I'm angry and it makes me less so other people would feel differently. Most people consider me a generally calm person.

You can't really judge people on their music tastes. there are however subculture sets. If you watch a horror movie they will tend to play goth /doom metal and so the genres are associated. Some people actually try to follow what they think will make them part of the culture. this guy is probably one of those "lost black sheeps"

Different groups have different mindsets. I hate to stereotype, but its true.

Scene/emo kids: always talk about rainbow, cupcakes, robots, anything weird, Alesana, All Time Low, Bring Me the Horizon. (and how the worker at hot topic is so hot)

Metalheads: just love being hardcore

its all in the mentality. Not saying every scene/emo/metalhead/punk whatever is like this, but many are.

No, and quite honestly, I'm slightly taken aback by your assumption that this is the "average metalhead." In fact, I am the opposite from this guy, apparently. Gore and blood are nowhere near my sphere of interests. I am extremely shy when I'm talking to women that I really like out of fear of saying something stupid, causing them to reject me. And while there is literally nothing wrong with BDSM and (consensual) sexual torture, I'm simply not into that, though this might be because I am very inexperienced when it comes to sex in general, much less anything kinky.

I had a roommate who was a pretty big metal head. He played drums in a metal band. He went to metal shows and came back with bruises and stuff from being in the pit. His band practiced at my place sometimes, so I know that they were "real" metal. He was just a normal, laid back guy with a really sweet girlfriend and a nice family, though. He was kind to just about everybody, and he could get along with people from most crowds (metal heads, average college students, their parents, etc.). He was always into the more musical/technical aspect of metal, though, and he never wrote lyrics.

Not all of them (us), but when you listen to songs with shock value then some things you don't think much of. Some people say things to stand out like that, and that dude sounds like that type. I'd say just ignore these random outbursts and talk to him like you normally would.

? Nah, not all metalheads are like that. There are some people like that, from all ends of the spectrum. A lot of people are into gothic lolita, gore/blood, torture and bdsm, I guess there'd be a lot of that in the Metal scene. A lot of death metal bands celebrate that kinda' lifestyle. But its not really a standard thing.

Well, gore is nice and blood but I'm not really interested in it.. for example a album cover where there a putrit pile of corpses and raining blood.. that's awesome.. but that's because I'm childish and that's how I am.. and I also listen to a lot of goregrind/porngrind/grindcore so one must be used to watching all sorts of gory themes on the covers

True metalheads listen to metal because it's amazing, not to show off to girls. Most of the time girls don't give a sh*t what Morbid Angel's new album sounded like (HOLY F***ING SHIT!? SERIOUSLY?!?!).
