I had a call yesterday with a few mates I served with, we raised a glass to absent friends.
in the UK we have Remembrance Sunday this weekend.
i will meet up with friends at local memorial.
Usually I go to the National Arboretum as I have friends whose names are etched on the walls, however it’s a bit of a drive now.

We have Memorial Day in May, but we like to honor all on Veteran's Day.
Respects from across the pond. Despite a disagreement back in 1812, since then both of our nations, in war and peace, have benefitted from our "special relationship."
Speaking of 1812... you chaps burned down the White House. Is there a chance that you could come back and finish the job?
I'll call my brother and thank him for his time in the Navy. I will attend a ceremony in the local park for veterans and will sing the national anthem for them as a solo.
Nice! You must have a beautiful voice.
How did the singing go today?
That's always good news!
Escorted by my lovely mom, my soon-to-retire military dad is gonna lead many retired service men, women, dogs and even equipment into a large gymnasium that my military brothers, my husband & I have rented for the entire day where we and a large bunch of volunteers will repeatedly thank them with a luncheon and a military ball in their honor.
That is going to be amazing! I love that idea!
Thank you @TrueConfection for the MHGirl pick. :)
And, yes, it was a beautiful all-day event. I'm so glad to see lots of happy veterans touched by our gesture for them. <3
In public, I always walk up to them and thank them for their service. It’s not a one day a year thing for me.

I took one of my cats to the vet today.
And I also remembered all of my ancestors who have fought in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, and the War in Vietnam.
Whenever I have the chance to talk to a veteran, I say "Thank you for your service." and shake their hand... or elbow bump following COVID guidelines.
I always get the urge to say something when I see a veteran, but I'm too shy in person.
I do it all the time whenever I stop by to buy a special prescription dog or cat food. For instance, I have to get my cats Royal Canin Urinary SO Dry Cat Food which is prescription-only cat food. So, my vet wrote the prescription and I buy it from her and thank her all the time for keeping all of my animals - 6 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 horses - in tip-top shape.
I’ll be getting my free meals and yelling semper fi to anyone with an eagle globe and anchor.
Excellent!
I am going to an adjacent town to watch the parade.
Parades are always a fun celebration.
I always make a donation to the USO. I also make a donation to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
"Thank you for your service to our country." If it's a Vietnam Vet, I add: "Welcome home!".
By dressing up as an afghan, and standing outside their house shouting "why the fuck do you think you deserve peace and family, when you took both from me!" every 10-20 minutes.
Maybe even get a few people to join in!
I'll thank them for all the great things they did for America
by voting for the politicians that won't send them to war
I really find this... annoying. You thank vets with boards, but don't give a fuck if a vet ends uo homeless. Words mean nothing when colleagues are suffering from PTSD. It's just hypocrisy to make you feel better...
I think if you read the replies, not everyone gives insincere gratitude.
The problem here is that you are offering words, which don't help those in real need. I am a carreer soldier, so I will most likely only become a veteran when I retire (then again, in my books, a veteran is somebody who has seen live combat, but let's not get into semantics), but there are a lot of guys who leave service way sooner - and they find themselves in a terrible position.
So if people really cared for veterans, they would at least try to achieve good care for those who have honorably left service.
I bought my brother lunch.
FYI he was an Army vet for war dogs so he's a double vet.
In Germany, we don't thank vets. Cause they're associated with Nazis and Hitler.
That's stupid. WW2 ended like 80 years ago.
@SlightlyEccentric It's a sore subject.
i wouldn't say it's a "sore subject". these days, the nazi label is thrown around like crazy. you think that letting in so many immigrants into germany is a bad idea? nazi. you think vaccines shouldn't be forced by government? nazi. you think the european union fucks countries over that are actually able to contribute economically? nazi.
and of course if you're patriotic, you're a nazi. we're trying so hard "not to be nazi", that we're fucking our own country and the entire world laughs at germans decisions.
nazi is the new label for "not being a fucking communist" XD
@SlightlyEccentric i think also a thing is that since hitler times, germany had no single war fighting for itself in defense or attack. mostly just the UN ordering germany to send troops to some piss poor shithole, that can't fight back against western exploitation. germay has degenerated into americas bitch. that's why we have no national pride and no pride for our military. cause it doesn't fight for "our" interst.
Remind me though, wasn't the nazi party officially disbanded in 1945 and was forbidden thereafter by law from being formed as a political party ever again? It was the ruling political party not the name for the armed forces of Germany.
There is no shame in loving your country. Don't let those idiots who say otherwise try and convince you as such. I mean everyone in Germany knows not to do that shit again, right? So why should anyone who calls themselves German be afraid to love their country? Because some ignorant nutjobs can't tell the difference between loving your country and insane political ideology?
All it is is thanking a vet for doing what few would have the guts to do and that is being a defender of your own nation. All those who say it's wrong to thank vets probably would never have that level of courage. So really, this isn't 1941, this is 2021. If you do see a vet just say thanks for serving and that's it. It doesn't need to be some formal ceremony nonsense or anything.
@SlightlyEccentric well since it's those idiots that govern my country and apparently, the majority is "ok" with it, i do genuinely feel shame for my country.
I will thank a veteran for serving our country.
Tell them that I'm an animal lover and thank them for all the critters they've helped nurse back to health.
I am a vet
Thank you for protecting my freedoms. ❤
Appreciated just the same!
A moment of silence
