Do you like modern or dated buildings?

Me and my boyfriend have just bought our first house together, we've still got all the paperwork to get through so nothing is official yet but fingers crossed it's ours.

We only went in to look at it to be noisy at first but we instantly fell in love. We couldn't get the house out of our minds I'm still so excited I can't believe soon it will be ours.

It's in a great area and we got it for so cheap to because it's a fixer but it's a 3 bedroom Victorian house. Me and my partner think it's gorgeous. It still has a lot of the original Victorian features in it like the fireplaces and doors.

It's so, so pretty. Me and my boyfriend are very much into vintage stuff. I just think vintage never goes out of style and it's so classic whilst modern houses are tacky and cheaply made. It's all to flashy and tends are constantly changing. I really hate all this grey what's in fashion right now. It's your house it needs lots of light, colour and character to make you feel at home.

a lot of our friends and family have mixed views on the house and think we need to turn it modern but we like it the way it is and we our just gonna work around it. I'd hate to ruin such a stunning house I feel so lucky to hopefully been living in soon.

I'm with you - I am old and old is good. It's worth preserving and keeping as true-to-age as possible. Most people who have bought Victorians near us keep the outside true-to-age, BUT update the interior with many modern improvements, particularly in the kitchen and baths. If you have the money, there are any number of "traditional Vic" cabinet styles which would work well, having compatible froufrou and design elements of the era. Then you have "transitional" which is what we have- solid maple and maple ply, with some simple relief on the doors, and finally "modern" which would be like plain boxes (think IKEA).
If you stick with a "pure" redo, know in advance that you will have to figure on at the very least DOUBLING or even TRIPLING your refurb budget. Any moldings will most likely have to be custom-routed and jointed to match, or at the very least, "laid up" (assembled) from a certain assortment of smaller trims. And if the original woods were solid woods such as maple or oak- or heaven forbid, walnut- figure on that running from $10- per foot- just for the raw stock! If the home has shaped plaster trim, then a mold will have to be taken and new plaster will have to be laid and then struck with the template to match the existing. Tin ceilings can be replaced with decent replicas, if you have those. Also realize that any thing you change or add will have to meet modern specs for safety, ie electrical, plumbing, ventilation, etc.
Our "kitchen" redo- which included vinyl cushion flooring in the adjacent TV room, kitchen and two halls, all new SS apps, maple cabinets (just semi-custom, not even full custom), paint, sink, wall tile, "quartz" counters, two new electrical lines, etc. ran 40K. We bought the apps in 1-2020, just before covid hit. We took the fridge because ours blew, and kept the others in the warehouse until the kitchen was updated almost 2 YEARS later due to various reasons, mostly related to supply chain problems. I re-ran the numbers. If I had to recreate the re-do, it would now cost well over $60K,- if even AVAILABLE- just 2.5 years later.
We actually know a couple who bought an "historical landmark" house , built in the mid 1800's. Several additions have been built onto the house, and while the outside looks old, the inside is a haphazard mash-mash of old, mid-century and modern. The only thing "consistent" throughout the house is that you are always tripping where the levels of the floors change a few to several inches. And boy, there are a lot of level changes. And knowing this couple, they probably spent as much for the new stuff as for the house itself- and this was before covid. I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer on you- I wish you all the best of luck with your endeavors. If I were 50 years younger, I would give it a shot too. I'm just trying to explain a few things before you get into thing, and possibly into them over your head. Good luck.

I like modern more because it's practical to clean the everything works better, the space is more efficiently used, I like the look of some modern buildings they can do creative stuff, I like the glass even if I keep my shutters closed sometimes ^^ It just fits my lifestyle better and I don't care that much about how my room looks tbh.

dated. cause dated buildings will last longer than modern ones. modern houses are built with materials that really don't make it far past 10 years before it needs renovation.
