Why was he impressed that I hate seeing people in pain?

A couples days ago, I saw a guy on the ground twisting in pain. I stayed there, asked questions such as what happened, if he needs water, etc. and got help. I've never seen someone in that much pain rolling like that.

He didn't want to say what happened but I think someone attacked him in a sensitive area. After he recovered he was impressed I didn't laugh. Why? There is nothing funny about seeing someone or an animal in pain.

I think that's basic empathy. Why would he be impressed that a person has basic empathy?

i think he wasn't impressed that you "hate seeing people in pain". i think it was more about the fact that you went over to help, cause not everyone does that.
