When you compliment back when someone compliments you, what's the reason?

I've seen this happen many times, and I think I have an idea, but I'd like to hear from you.

That's the courteous thing to do

It's something I was taught to do

I want to show my romantic interest

This is hard for me. It's between A, C, D and E. I do think it is courteous when it's genuine. I was taught but not so much that I do it all the time. If it's a girl I'm interested in, I'm definitely more likely to compliment back. I'm not always thinking about sex, but I'm more than likely thinking she's gorgeous or unique in some way.
