So you've been messing around with a guy for two years and he feels the need to explain himself even though you aren't in an exclusive relationship.

He clearly cares about you to some degree, as in more than just some girl he messes around with. If he didn't care about you he would continue to do his own thing and not say a word about it to you. He is seeking your approval for him to continue to mess around with other women to see how you react. Maybe this is his way of seeing if you care too or if you want more than just sex with him. Communicate with him so he knows your honest thoughts and feelings. If you honestly do not care what he does, tell him that. If you are interested in him too and want him all to yourself, tell him that.
