My husband was actively seeking guard placement & I had the same issues in my head. He injured himself right before the cut off age and was unable to enter due to broken bone.
My only advice is to accept that if he feels called to it you need to learn to respect it, that he isn't doing it to leave you or mess around away from you.
If this is something that will help grow his character as a man & you are there holding up his back, it will be a growth/strengthening experience for your relationship, which in the long run (if you both feel there's a future & you're each others match) it will turn into a good thing :)
Fully open communication, tell him your anxiety and allow him to help you through it.

He's going to "make a difference"? Is that his inculcation or yours? What exactly does he hope joining the military will accomplish?
It depends on if he is in a unit that gets deployed often.
