Why does my boyfriend have the need to call me every night?

I have been with my boyfriend for 8 months and ever since November, he has been calling me every night (if we don't see each other that day). We would see each other three times a week. I dont mind this but Im just wondering why..
I asked him why he wants to call me everyday and that he doesn't need to, and he replied "because I just need to hear your voice everyday"
Our phone calls used to be over an hour (our longest was 9 hours) but nowadays its gone lesser (30 minutes max.)
Why do you think he has the need to call me every night? Is there other reasons? Is this normal?
