He said ‘It may just be for awhile that we are apart and maybe down the road we can try again’ ‘Just saying it could happen but just not now and I don't know when’

We have been on & off talking.. & hanging out for almost a year. He will tell me he still loves me. We have been through a lot. We have been back & forth on whether to move on or not… He usually will say things like ‘We’re not throwing things away, just let it go for awhile’. & we will see each other again. ‘It’s not goodbye’. Things that make me think he just needs space & time.
