What does 'I need space' or 'I need time' mean?

Pretty much what the question says. If a boyfriend/ex-boyfriend says that, what exactly is it? Do they just have other stuff going on and they think a relationship just makes it more complicated? I know it's possible they just say it to let you down easy, but other than that what do you think it could mean?

And as a side question why do guys think that being in a relationship will just make everything else they're going through worse? From a girl's point of view I would want my boyfriend there to make me feel better you know?

It means they want to end it, but want to be polite. as you say.

I agree that if they're leaving because of other problems, thinking the relationship will just make things more complicated, they're on the wrong track.

But a lot of people see relationships as sort of luxury for good times!

Yeah... it means they want to end the relationship. I don't think "I need space" has ever resulted in anything other than a break up.

Second question: some guys feels that way. Not all.

"I need space" or "I need time" translates to "I'm not that interested in you". It's the nice way of saying it. Sorry if his answer seems harsh but it's the honest truth.
