Is it better to be a wife or side chick?

I've been a side chick before though not on purpose. I learned that was the position I was in after entering into what I thought was a relationship with this guy. I eventually dumped him but it left me wondering.

His fiance did get treated well in terms of getting quality time, gifts, and trips etc. But at the same time there were multiple of us. I unfortunately ended up learning this too late and got an std. It's impossible if she didn't as he got her pregnant while cheating on her.

But again he always picks her over other women and is quick to label his sides as just for sex etc.

Yet I would not want to be her. I'm kind of thankful that I found out about him and left. But I do feel like most times guys are praised for having sides and the sides are often seen as less than quality women... even if the guy is trash.

So, I ask is it always better to be the main chick or wife despite what the guy (or woman) is doing on the side?
