What are Traits Women Look For In Guys?

I've read about 40 research papers. Did a lot of interviews with women who are single, married, divorced, and widowed.

This is for a new article I'm doing on traits and characteristics women look for in men. I'm not looking for the physical. More for what guys do.

So far I have a list of 30 traits or characteristics. I'm looking to narrow this down to the top traits women look for.

What's your top 3 traits or characteristics?

I forgot to include the age range of the overall group. The range for the studies and interviews was 18-78. All opinions are welcome.

I am very attracted to the traits you listed as well.


For starters, I’m 19, and in a relationship.
For personality traits or characteristics, I usually want someone who is intelligent, honest, hardworking, kind, somewhat extroverted, outgoing, confident, mature, sense of humor, gentle, respectful, responsible, logical, open, high morals, loyalty, and patient.


I don’t expect them to be a genius with an extremely high IQ, but I am really attracted to men who are intelligent. I think it’s easier to hold a conversation with men who are intelligent.
With intelligence, it seems like logic is usually tied in. I always found myself to be more compatible with logical men, since I am more emotional; we would balance eachother out.
Honesty and openness is so important to me because I am honest with others. I would rather have someone be honest and open with me, than lie and keep things a secret.
Extroverted or outgoing guys seem to attract my attention more. I am the opposite, so I am drawn to those who seem to get me out of my comfort zone.
I really love patient and respectful guys. Those two traits tie together because if one is patient, then they respect the person, and if they respect the person, they will be patient.
When a guy is hardworking, responsible, and mature, it really shows that they are an adult… I suppose. I want someone who is determined and committed to something, someone who is responsible and mature in life and other aspects such as work, relationships, and their own life.
I want a guy who is kind, gentle, and has high morals. Morality is somewhat subjective, but I guess the better description would be, I want someone who has shared morals, values, and views… Whether it be religion, politics, or society… I want there to be kindness and gentleness towards people, especially those around them and the ones they love and care about.
A sense of humor is always wanted. It’s sexy. I don’t know how else to explain it! I just want someone I can joke around with.
I want loyalty, someone who is loyal. I don’t want someone who won’t commit to me.


I hate to narrow it down to three traits, lol, that’s so difficult… But I think my top three traits would be;
Kindness, intelligence, and respectfulness.

It is difficult to narrow. Everyone is different though. So, it helps me place the most common ones towards the top. Less common at the bottom.

I'm only 17, so I'm not sure if I'm eligible to opine on this question, but I'll give it a shot either way. I'm single, I'm a senior in high school.

Character wise, I expect someone who is of the same maturity level as me and maybe a tad higher. I would not like to date a guy who is immature, overall. I expect honesty, trust and communication from my partner along with traits like empathy, respectful attitude, good listener, faithfulness, passion, self confidence, independence, intelligence, kindness and a good sense of humor. I would not like to date someone who is serious all the time - there is a time and place for everything. I'd want a goofy guy who can laugh at himself and not take everything too seriously. I want a genuine nice guy who would accept me for who I am and not someone who wants to change me as a whole. Everyone has their flaws, but everyone wants to be accepted and respected as well. I'm not talking about toxic traits, of course.

To narrow it down, my top 3 characteristics I expect in my future partner would be: kindness, faithfulness and self confidence.

Personality is #1 and that in and of itself might contain more than one “trait”. For example, I can think of three personality traits that are important.

One would be humour. I love to laugh and a guy with a great sense of humour is a must.

Manners. Simple. Just have basic, decent manners.

Be a gentleman. Another often overlooked trait, but those little things like grabbing the door, pulling my chair out or holding an umbrella all add up. Little things that shows me he cares for me.

Something that might help you break things down. Just my way of thinking.

If you look at personality and character as two separate things it can help you separate them. Character is who a person is at their core. Personality is what someone shows the world.
In that regard, character regulates personality.

When I did this I was able to tag more individual traits.

this is difficult cause I have so many more than just 3… but if I HAD to narrow it down it’d be:


1. Genuineness… a guy who is genuine with his feelings and actions. he doesn’t fake anything or put on an act, he’s just genuinely himself.


2. Maturity and loyalty… someone who I can have serious and deep conversations and discussions with, someone who doesn’t play childish games and knows what he wants and is straightforward, someone who stands by his loved ones through thick and thin and is reliable, someone who is understanding and helps me improve and grow as a person and lastly, someone who is mature enough to not let his pride and ego get in the way of his relationships.


3. Humor… someone who I can have a great time with, laugh, joke and play around, someone who gets my weird humor and laughs at my silly jokes, someone who knows how to just live and enjoy himself with me.
